Sally Herndon ObituaryObituary published on Legacy.com by Messinger Mortuaries- Indian School Mortuary on Mar. 6, 2026.Remembering Sally B. HerndonOur lovely Sally passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 28, in the comfort of her home with her family nearby.Sally was born in New York in 1940 to Rae and Philip Bondy, and grew up in North Salem with her three siblings, Susan, Dick and Sandy. Growing up, Sally was an avid and skilled horsewoman, participating in many foxhunts, some with her father Philip as Master of the Hunt. Sally attended Skidmore College and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Art History and went on to a career in advertising in New York City. She married Bill, who was with Citibank, in 1965 and they lived in Katonah, NY where their two children, Alyson and Will, were born. And then it was off to ten years overseas, when Citibank sent Bill to Brussels, and later on, to San Juan, Toronto, and London. Sally and Bill didn't pass on the many adventurous opportunities open to them, and they did their share of traveling over those years. They toured all over Europe in self-planned tours with family and friends, and while in Puerto Rico, sailed and snorkeled their way around the Caribbean in their Ranger 29. When Bill was transferred to Toronto, they shipped the Ranger up to New York and sailed up the Hudson River, through the Erie Canal, and over Lake Ontario to Toronto. Next, after five years in London, Sally and Bill moved back to the U.S. to Los Angeles when Bill was recruited to Security Pacific Bank in 1982. They landed in Palos Verdes, where Alyson and Will finished high school and went off to college. Next, they were transferred up to San Francisco in 1992 when Bank of America bought Security Pacific. After 10 years in San Francisco, Bill retired from Bank of America and they decided to relocate to Scottsdale in 2003. From there, they summered each year in Montana, where they bought their house on the Swan River in BigFork. Family reunions quickly became an annual tradition at their riverside retreat, with kayaking, barbecuing, hiking, golfing, gardening, painting, grandchild driving lessons, teepee ceremonies, firepit dinners, and general grabass with all five grandchildren and lots of friends and visitors.Whether it was hiking in the California or Montana mountains, sailing in the San Juan Islands or kayaking on the Swan River in BigFork, walking the Botanical Garden in Scottsdale, or visiting any museum, Sally was always up for an adventure or an outing. She loved art and architecture and all manner of flora, and was accomplished with watercolors and pastels. She had a flair for crafts, loved to cook, and was an excellent party hostess… and of course she was a great conversationalist, always adding her unique brand of humor, smarts and empathy to any discussion. Through all the moving and relocating and traveling, Sally acquired many fast friends from all over the map. Certainly she misses all of them as much as they – and we – all miss her.She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Bill Herndon, her son Will (Jen) Herndon and his two children, Lucy Herndon and Levi Herndon, her daughter Alyson (Tom) Preston and her three children, Emily (Andreas) Panos, Graham Preston, and Louis Preston, and her siblings Susan (David) Willoughby, Dick (Margie) Bondy, and Sandy (Mike) Kelley. To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
