She was 72 years old.Born on April 27, 1953, at Flushing Hospital in Queens, New York, Ruth was the beloved daughter of the late Joan Wemmlinger Martell and Edwin E. Martell. She grew up in Dix Hills, Long Island, New York, where she graduated from Half Hollow Hills High School in 1975, earning a Regents High School Diploma.Ruth had a heart for people, and that became even more evident as she began her nursing career. Ruth pursued her passion for nursing at Pilgrim State Psychiatric Center, School of Nursing, where she received her Diploma of Nursing in 1978. Her career began at Good Samaritan Hospital, where she met her devoted husband, Edward Kolk. Their union on October 7, 1978, marked the beginning of a lifelong partnership filled with love and shared dreams.Ruth's nursing career was distinguished by her dedication and excellence. She rose to the position of Surgical Unit Assistant Head Nurse before transferring to the Emergency Department, where she served for 20 years. Her commitment to professional development led her to achieve Certified Emergency Nurse (C.E.N.) status. Furthering her education, Ruth earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Stony Brook University and a Master of Science in from Adelphi University.Her passion for teaching and nurturing future nurses brought her to Suffolk County Community College, School of Nursing, where she was a beloved faculty member. Promoted to Associate Professor of Nursing, Ruth received the prestigious State University of New York Chancellor's Awards for Excellence in 2003.In retirement, Ruth and Edward moved to Fletcher, North Carolina, to be closer to their daughter and her family. Ruth was an avid gardener, enjoying both vegetable and flower gardening, with raised beds lovingly built by Edward. Her house was often arrayed with cuttings from her garden, as well as her favorite houseplants. She also cherished her time visiting the Biltmore Estate gardens for inspiration.A woman of deep faith, Ruth was an active member of Radiant Church in Arden, North Carolina. She dedicated much of her time to volunteering, leading women's ministries, and serving as a deaconess. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, guiding her in all herendeavors. Her love for Christian music and literature enriched her spiritual journey. Affectionately known as "Grammy" to her grandchildren, Ruth enjoyed spending time with each of them every chance she had, often passing down nuggets of knowledge and always lots and lots of love.Ruth is survived by her loving husband, Edward W. Kolk; her daughter, Allison K. Bradshaw, and son-in-law, Joshua Bradshaw, of Fairview, NC; and her treasured grandchildren, Addison, Elizabeth, Charlotte, and Henry Bradshaw. Also left to cherish her memory are her brother, Edwin Martell and his wife Florrie, and her sisters, Bette Carlson and husband Richard, and Linda Martell. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.A celebration of Ruth's life will be held on March 21, 2026, at 10am at New Life Community Church in Asheville, NC. Memorial donations may be made to Nurses House, an organization that provides short-term financial assistance to registered nurses unable to work due to illness or injury. This cause was near and dear to Ruth's heart, reflecting her lifelong commitment to caring for others.Ruth Kolk will be remembered for her compassion, dedication, and the love she shared with all who knew her.
