December 13, 1942— March 9, 2026
Russell J. Townsend, a cherished patriarch and devoted family man, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on March 9, 2026. Born on December 13, 1942, in the son of David and Lilly Townsend, he grew up in a bustling household and shared a particularly close bond with his brother Lenus Townsend. Preceded in death by his parents and siblings George, Junior, Betty, and Dorothy Townsend, Russell lived a life defined by hard work, loyalty, and deep commitment to family.
A proud United States Army veteran, Russell continued his service to the community as a lifelong member of the Funkhouse Post of the American Legion. For 50 years, he worked at Deig Brothers Construction, where his strong work ethic and expertise earned the respect of colleagues and left a lasting impression on those around him.
In retirement, Russell found his greatest joy in the company of family. He loved grilling and smoking meats for gatherings and cheering on his favorite NASCAR drivers. He is survived by his children Michael Townsend, David Townsend and wife Brandi, and Shannon Carden and husband Tony, as well as their mother Allene Townsend Gunn. He was reunited in heaven with his son Kevin Townsend. Russell was a loving grandfather to Holly Parker, Jarod Parker, Brandy Townsend, Jacob Townsend, Taylor Townsend, Alexis Townsend, Cassidy Townsend, and Kevin Townsend Jr., and he cherished his many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family. His longtime companion and caregiver, Darcy Townsend, stood by his side for many years, and he held a special place in his heart for his faithful dogs Hunter, Half Pint, and Biggs.
