Rubén Aquino Méndez

Rubén Aquino Méndez, 70, passed away at UNC Lenoir Health Care on Friday, March 6, 2026. Born in El Salvador on March 6, 1956, he was the son of the late Tránsito Aquino Ramos and Vicenta Méndez de Aquino. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Miguel Aquino Méndez, Juan Aquino Méndez, and Eduardo Aquino Méndez.

He is survived by his children, Saúl Rubén Aquino Merlos and wife Claudia, Hugo Salvador Aquino Merlos and wife Mirna, Erick Ricardo Aquino Merlos and wife Karla, and Yeni Patricia García; his grandchildren, Jimena Valentina Aquino, Liliana Maribel Aquino, Felipe Salvador Aquino Vásquez, Alejandra Guadalupe Aquino Vásquez, Kenya Lissett Aquino Argueta, and Sergio Antonio Aquino Argueta; and his brothers Aníbal Aquino Méndez, Fausto Aquino Méndez, Jesús Aquino Méndez, and Eliseo Aquino Méndez. Rubén is also survived by his special family, Nidia Marlene Segovia, Mauricio Martínez Ruiz, Susana Martínez, and Lupe Martínez; his special friend, Bert; and his faithful canine companions, April, Junior, Lola, and Ruby.

Rubén was a man whose kindness and warmth touched everyone he met. Known for his friendly nature, he never met a stranger and could easily strike up a conversation with anyone. His joyful spirit and generous heart made him a friend to many, and his presence brought comfort and laughter to those around him.

He especially loved taking peaceful walks at Cliffs of the Neuse State Park, where he found beauty in nature and quiet moments of reflection. At home, he was a wonderful cook who enjoyed preparing meals for others, and he had a special skill for sewing, often creating or mending things with care and patience. Above all, Rubén will be remembered for his joyful and giving spirit. He had a way of making people feel welcome and valued, and his kindness left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
