Ronald Lee Byerly

1933 — 2026

Eaton Rapids, MI

Ronald Lee Byerly of Eaton Rapids, Michigan, passed away on March 12, 2026, at the age of 93. Born on January 2, 1933, in Adrian, Michigan, to Kenneth and Helen (Cavander) Byerly, Ron grew up on the family pony farm in Stockbridge. He graduated from Stockbridge High School in 1951, where he participated in the Naval Reserves, an experience that shaped his lifelong dedication to service. He went on to enlist in the United States Army, training as a military mechanic while stationed in California and Utah.

In 1951, Ron married his high school sweetheart, Joanne Wheeler. The couple moved to Eaton Rapids in 1957, where he founded and operated Byerly-Wheeler Garage, specializing in trucks and heavy machinery. He also began driving a school bus for Eaton Rapids Public Schools and later served as Supervisor of Transportation, a role he cherished for many years. Ron’s commitment to his community was evident in his long service with the Eaton Rapids Fire Department and Hamlin Township Fire Department from 1964 to 1987, followed by his tenure as Hamlin Township Fire Chief from 1988 until 2003. A devoted member of St. Peter Catholic Church, he served as a Knight and volunteered with St. Vincent de Paul Charities. He found great joy in the outdoors, hunting and fishing, and was a steadfast supporter of Eaton Rapids athletics, especially wrestling and football, where he volunteered countless hours cheering on local teams.

Ron was preceded in death by his wife, Joanne Byerly; his parents; and his sister, Kathleen Wilson. He is survived by his daughters, Kimberly (Ed) Kleehammer, Kaye (Todd) Byerly-Cole, Pamela (David) Wigent, and Jody (Rick) Strank; his grandchildren, Eric (Jeanene) Byerly, Heather Byerly (Andy), Russell (Nicole) Lawrence, Beth Lawrence, Ben (Michelle) Lawrence, Briar Wigent, Jacob (Sarah) Strank, and Blake (Lindsey) Strank; twelve great-grandchildren; his brother, Lee (Kathy) Byerly; and many extended family members and friends.
