Preserve forever →Ron Kaufman
July 6, 1935— March 10, 2026
Des Plaines, IL
Ron Kaufman was born on July 6, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois, to Harry and Annette Kaufman. He lived his entire life in Des Plaines, graduating from Maine East High School. A lifelong learner, he attended more than 25 universities, pursuing knowledge in the social sciences, particularly economics, history, politics, and geography. His curiosity led him around the world, where he enjoyed experiencing firsthand the places and cultures he had studied.
Ron devoted 37 years to education as a high school social studies teacher at Mather, Taft, Arlington Heights, and Prospect High Schools. He was deeply passionate about his subjects and brought history to life for his students, most notably by organizing and leading numerous field trips that allowed them to encounter the past beyond the classroom.
In retirement, Ron continued to nurture his inquisitive mind by attending lectures at nearby universities and the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations. He followed the stock market daily, remained an avid reader for as long as his eyesight allowed, and took quiet pleasure in a good meal. He had a remarkable gift for conversation, easily connecting with strangers and making them feel seen and valued. Ron also held a deep love for animals, especially cats. Over the years he provided many beloved feline companions with safe, loving homes and supported organizations dedicated to rescuing and caring for them.
Ron passed peacefully, just as he had hoped, gently into the night. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Betty J. Kaufman; his daughters, Sharon (Tom) Nutter and Susan (Florian) Zwyssig; his five grandchildren, Janae (Reed) Hanson, Natalie Nutter, Danielle Nutter, Luc Zwyssig, and Oliver Zwyssig; and his two great-grandsons, Henry Hanson and Marcus Hanson. He will be deeply missed by his family and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
