Pearl River, NY

Rory Finn, born September 5, 1943, in Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland, passed away on March 12, 2026, after courageously battling ALS for more than 30 years, surrounded by the love of family and friends. The beloved son of the late Eileen (née Rafferty) and George Finn, he was the youngest of four children. Rory was predeceased by his brothers Kenneth (Philomena) and Dermot, his sister Lillian, and his loving wife of more than 53 years, Karen (née Carey).

In 1954, Rory emigrated to the United States with his family and settled in Inwood, a place that remained dear to him throughout his life. It was there that he met Karen and began building his American dream, eventually becoming the owner of The Sloop. More than a business, the bar became a gathering place where his sparkling blue eyes, quick wit, and ready song or story drew people in and forged lifelong friendships he treasured deeply.

A gifted athlete, Rory was a champion Gaelic football player who, alongside his brothers, won two New York GAA Championships in 1964 and 1967. He also excelled in soccer with the German Hungarians, earning selection to the German American and Cosmopolitan All-Star teams on many occasions and competing across the United States and Germany. He later served as Vice President of the Cosmopolitan Soccer League, reflecting his lifelong dedication to sport and community. After moving to Pearl River in 1976 with Karen, he raised their sons in a close-knit community that echoed his proud Irish heritage and love of New York. A hardworking provider from his teenage years onward, he was a machinist with Amtrak for over 30 years, owned an HVAC company, and ensured safety at several city restaurants.

Even after his ALS diagnosis, Rory continued to work and play soccer for many years, facing his illness with remarkable resilience, determination, and an inspiring spirit. His deep faith sustained him, and his joyful, contagious laugh and love of life left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. He is survived by his sons, Rory (Mary) and Damien; his grandchildren, Rory (Kaitlyn), Colin, Aedan, and Jada; his sisters-in-law, Maureen and Beatrice (Michael); his many beloved nieces and nephews; and his extended families, the McShanes and the Hands. He was forever grateful for the friends he considered family, whose loyalty and support enriched his life in countless ways.
