Pompton Plains, NJ
Robert W. Mueller Sr., 99, of Pompton Plains, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2026. Born in Toledo, Ohio in 1926, he moved to Fair Lawn, New Jersey, and graduated from Eastside High School in Paterson. He served in the Navy during World War II as an electronics technician aboard the USS Okaloosa. After his military service, Robert began a long and distinguished career as a broadcast engineer with the CBS Television Network. His work took him across the globe, covering numerous political conventions, and allowed him the memorable experience of bringing his family to Florida for the launch of Apollo 11. He took great pride in his profession, even building a television transmitter in his basement, and maintained a lifelong interest in ham radio.
Robert’s passion for flying led him to earn his pilot’s license and eventually own a Cessna airplane. He and his wife, Helen, especially cherished their flights to Martha’s Vineyard. He was also a cherished member of a group of fellow pilots known as the “Soup Dudes,” who gathered regularly at a local diner.
Robert was predeceased by his beloved wife of nearly 70 years, Helen; his brother, William Mueller; and his sister, Marilyn Orrick. He is survived by his six sons, Robert Jr. (Camille), William (Michele), James (Lorna), Glenn (Monica), Kevin, and Mark (Tracey); his sister, Diane Perry; eleven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
