Robert (Bobby) Thomas Wasden Sr., 87, devoted husband and father, longtime educator and coach, passed away surrounded by family on March 14, 2026, in Montgomery, Alabama.Bobby was born on September 26, 1938, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Opal and Bob Wasden. His family later moved to Bolling, Alabama, and he attended Greenville High School. There he played football and earned All-American honors for his outstanding high school career.He then signed a football scholarship with Coach Shug Jordan at Auburn University and was a member of the 1957 National Championship team. In 1960, he was selected to play in the Blue-Gray Game and was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers where he was for a period of time before returning to Auburn University for his graduation.Following his playing career, Bobby began a long and accomplished career in education and coaching. His first coaching position was at Georgiana High School followed by Meadowview Christian, Woodham High School, and Demopolis Academy, before eventually returning to Meadowview Christian. During his two tenures at Meadowview Christian, his teams won 5 state championships. He concluded his coaching career at Prattville High School in 1992 and served as Principal at Georgiana High School before retiring. Throughout his career, he valued the opportunity to work with countless players, students, educators, and coaches. In 2002, he was inducted into the Alabama Independent Schools Hall of Fame.His retirement years were spent in Butler County where he and his wife planted deep roots in the community. He was an active member of the Church of Christ, and served in many roles over the years. He enjoyed fellowship with many friends and dedicated time to volunteering throughout the Georgiana area. Bobby and his wife of 62 years, Wanda, enjoyed years of travel all over the world, though their favorite memories were made in Laguna Beach, Florida.He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved sister, Gwendolyn Humphrey.He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Wanda, sons Tommy (Kim) Wasden, Shayne (Patrice) Wasden, and daughter, Wendy Wasden, six grandchildren who affectionately called him Big Daddy: Payton (Abbi) Wasden, Mary Beth (Whitmore) Jackson, Gerren (Calli) Wasden, Anna Shay Wasden, Jordyn (Bryson) Lariscy, and Samuel Kriegel and six great-grandchildren: Ava Sims Wasden, Covington Wasden, Saylor Wasden, Campbell Jackson, Case Wasden, and Anna Charles Jackson.Funeral services will be on Friday, March 20, 2026. Visitation will take place from 11:30 to 1:00, with the service beginning at 1:00 at Walnut Street Church of Christ in Greenville, Alabama. The graveside will follow at Sunrise Cemetery, 3013 Mobile Road Greenville, Alabama.Pallbearers will be Tommy Wasden, Shayne Wasden, Payton Wasden, Gerren Wasden, Sam Kreigel, Bryson Lariscy, Steve Bozeman. Honorary pallbearers will be Norman Lowery, Dwayne Scott, Junior Thomasino, Paul Parker, David Norrell, and Whitmore Jackson.In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Georgiana Church of Christ, or Walnut Street Church of Christ in Greenville, Alabama.
