December 6, 1941— March 8, 2026
Bakersfield, CA
Robert Rodriguez Jr., age 84, passed away on March 8, 2026, in Bakersfield, California. Born on December 6, 1941, in Menard, Texas, to Robert and Maria Rodriguez on his grandfather’s ranch, he moved to California in 1963 with his beloved wife Elvira. The couple made Bakersfield their home for the next 63 years, building a life rooted in hard work and deep family devotion.
Robert’s early years were marked by shearing sheep, working cotton fields, and taking on any honest labor that came his way. After settling in California, he spent 21 years at Pacific Southern Foundries and then dedicated 23 years of service at San Joaquin Community Hospital, now Adventist Health. At the same time, he ran his own janitorial and gardening business. Even in retirement, he remained active, recycling everything he could to avoid waste. He shared many joyful cruises with Elvira, traveling to Alaska, South America, and Europe, and found simple pleasures in fishing, dancing, time with family, and being the beloved “Wello” to his grandchildren and constant companion to his dogs.
Known for his strong will, quiet strength, and unwavering commitment to providing for his family, Robert instilled a powerful work ethic in his children and grandchildren, often reminding them that “if you’re not early, then you’re late.” He was funny, charming, and generous, always ready to offer a ride, share food, or bring toys to neighborhood children. He made friends wherever he went and was recognized throughout town for his kindness and helpful spirit.
Robert is survived by his loving wife of 65 years and 9 months, Elvira Rodriguez; daughters Roberta Michele Rodriguez and Alisa Rodriguez Mangrum and her husband Cecil Todd Mangrum; grandchildren Cecilia Rodriguez Mangrum and her husband Andrew Macias Brown, Isabella Rodriguez Mangrum, and Maxmillian Rodriguez Mangrum; sister Francis Muñoz and husband Jesse of New Mexico; brothers Dario Rodriguez and Manuel Rodriguez of New Mexico; and many nieces and nephews across New Mexico, Texas, Florida, Tennessee, Arizona, and California. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Maria Rodriguez; sister Ermalinda Rodriguez Perez; and brothers Jose Agapeto Rodriguez and Gilbert Rodriguez, all of New Mexico.
His legacy of strength, generosity, humor, and devotion to family will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. To have known him was to know human kindness.
