Robert “Bob” R. Schug Sr., 84, Athens, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Saturday, March 7, 2026.
He was born March 7, 1942 in the town of Johnson, son of the late George and Dorothy (Weiler) Schug. On June 29, 1963, he married Joanne Klimpke at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Athens. She survives.
In 1960, Bob graduated from Athens High School and furthered his education, earning a degree from Delco Training School in Milwaukee. His first job was working as a mechanic for Norb’s Enco Service in Milwaukee. He moved back to Athens, was married and began working for Marathon Electric in Wausau. Bob and his family then relocated to Milwaukee, where he owned and operated Bob’s Enco Service. He moved his family back to Athens and bought a farm in the town of Halsey where he farmed for 43 years and also ran his own farm equipment business called B & J Equipment, then began working for Schuette Metals for 17 years as a welder. He retired at the age of 70.
Following retirement, he moved to the village of Athens and traveled with Joanne all over the country, including a trip to Alaska, where they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the Santa Claus House in Anchorage. Among his favorite pastimes, he enjoyed fishing and hunting with his sons, sons-in-law and grandkids. One of his most favorite things to do was bird watching.
Survivors include, the love of his life, Joanne Schug; eight children, Sandy Neubauer, Bob Schug Jr., Lisa (Pete) Kroening, Paul (Amanda) Schug, Scott Schug, Kenneth (Janae) Schug, Jennifer (Cory) Mauer and Jessica (John) Sommer; 23 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; eight siblings, Caroline Beran, Joan Hargraves, Pat (Norb) Boesl, George (Jean) Schug Jr., Dorothy Gajewski; Delmar (Charlotte) Schug, Sherry (Jim) Literski, and Pearl (Lyle) Guralski; one sister-in-law, Joline Schug; two Godsons, Nick Klimpke and Gary Gajewski; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by daughter, Julie Drinka; infant daughter, Cindy Schug; daughters-in-law, Tonya Schug and Jowanda Schug; two siblings, Delbert Schug and Sally Whaples; and brothers-in-law, Howard Whaples, Frank Beran, Lawrence Gajewski and Clem Hargraves.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2026 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Athens. Rev. George Graham will preside. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Athens. Visitation will be on Friday from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at church and again on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until time of Mass at the church. There will be rosary service at 6:00 p.m. Friday evening at the church.
