Augusta, GA
Dr. Robert Morrison Sandarg, known to friends and family as Bob, entered into rest on Saturday, February 28, 2026. Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, one of four children of Stanley and Marjorie Sandarg, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a bachelor’s degree with a double major in French and English, a master’s degree in French, and a PhD in Romance languages.
Bob served as a professor of French for thirty years, teaching at Middle Tennessee State University, Paine College in Augusta, and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he was granted emeritus status upon his retirement. A member of the Modern Language Association, he was a frequent contributor to literary and popular culture journals. Those who knew him remember his love of reading, traveling, and riding motorcycles. A lifelong martial artist, he studied judo, karate, and aikido before devoting more than twenty years to Tae Kwon Do, in which he earned a fourth-degree black belt.
Above all, Bob cherished time spent with his wife and family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Jana; his children, Mitchelle Holland (Lee), Kristin Hunter (Thomas), and Eric Sandarg (Raquel); his grandchildren, Thomas Hunter III and William Hunter; his sister, Nancy Rivkin (John); and his brother, Richard. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his sister, Barbara Puleio (Nicholas).
