January 25, 1948— March 6, 2026
New Haven, CT
Robert Michael Long passed away peacefully on the evening of March 6, 2026, at the age of 78. Born on January 25, 1948, in New York, New York, to Julia Hill Long and Robert Long, Michael lived a quiet and private life, valuing solitude, reflection, and simplicity. Those who knew him appreciated his thoughtful nature and steady presence.
He began his career as a firefighter and later served as a Fire Inspector with the New Haven Fire Department for more than fifteen years. He went on to work in Information Systems with Deloitte in Wilton, applying his analytical skills in the evolving field of technology. In his later years, Michael enjoyed working at the Polling Center at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, continuing to contribute his time and talents. In every role, he was respected for his integrity, reliability, and commitment to doing his work well.
Outside of his professional life, Michael found joy in reading, playing chess, and especially in science fiction. He was particularly fond of Star Trek, whose stories of exploration and wonder captured his imagination. Above all, he treasured the time spent with his beloved mother, Julia, with whom he shared a close and meaningful bond until her passing in May 2019.
Michael is survived by his twin brother, Mark (Marcia) Long of Seattle, Washington; cherished cousins Eva Bryant Smith of Hamden, Connecticut, and Curtis L. Bryant of Augusta, Georgia; as well as many extended family members and a valued circle of friends who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles. He will be remembered for his quiet strength, independence, and integrity by all whose lives he touched.
