Robert Lawrence Shober, 89, of Lancaster, passed away on Monday, March 9, 2026. Born in Chester, Pennsylvania, on December 12, 1936, he was the son of the late Samuel Shober and Irma Clark Shober.
He proudly served his country in the United States Navy for more than 26 years, enlisting in 1954 and retiring as a Master Chief Fire Control Technician in the submarine service. His career began aboard surface destroyers such as the USS Massey before transitioning to nuclear-powered submarines, including the USS Lewis and Clark and the USS George Bancroft. Among his many honors were six Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon. After his honorable transfer to the Fleet Reserve in 1980, he settled in Lancaster, South Carolina, where he worked as a fixed-base operator at Lancaster County Airport, holding commercial pilot licenses for single-engine land and sea, multi-engine land aircraft, and rotorcraft helicopters. He also volunteered for 33 years with the American Red Cross, putting his amateur radio license to use in emergency communications.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Shober. He is survived by his son, Robert L. Shober Jr. and his wife Pamela; his brother, Walter Shober; and his granddaughters, Emily and Rebecca Shober.
