Robert Howard “Bob” Tolar, 87, of Hutchinson, Kansas, passed away peacefully at his home on March 10, 2026. Born on August 23, 1938, in Hutchinson to Ralph Howard and Alice Mae Tolar, Bob was a lifelong learner and community servant. He graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1956, Hutchinson Junior College in 1958, and Kansas State University in 1961, where he was a proud member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. He served in the Air National Guard from July 1961 until July 1967, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Bob lived a life of quiet dedication and deep faith. A longtime active member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, he served 15 years on the Church Council, acted as usher and head usher, and chaired numerous committees. He was also a past member of the Rotary Club, AMBUCS, Civitan, and the Quarterback Club. A devoted K-State fan, he cherished every moment spent with his sons and grandsons. His professional path took him across the country and abroad, including work with Security Elevator Co., Kansas State Grain Inspection, Colorado State University in Nigeria, Farmland Industries, Whiting Coop, Farmway Coop, International Multifoods, Far Mar Co., and Shield Ag. He also gave more than 25 years of part-time service to Elliott Mortuary.
On July 7, 1963, Bob married the love of his life, Joan Marie Fast, in Hutchinson. Joan preceded him in death on March 25, 2024. He is survived by his sons, Dwight Tolar and wife Mary of Manhattan, Kansas, and Don Tolar of Cheney, Kansas; and his grandsons, Alex Tolar of Manhattan, and Drew and Reece Tolar of Cheney. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Joan, his brother Byron Tolar and wife Julia, sisters-in-law Joyce Hesse and husband Ted, and Jean May and husband Bob, nephew Stephen May, niece Linda Tolar, and nephew Michael Tolar.
