He is survived by: his wife Deborah Niehaus Whelan; his daughter Emily Whelan Parento (David); his grandchildren, James and Maggie; his children, Adam Whelan, Phillip Whelan, George and Lillian; and his siblings, Melvin, Eddie, Charles, John Whelan, Mary Taylor and Rosie Rogers. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, March 12th 2026 at 10:00 AM at the St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church (7813 Shelbyville Rd, Lyndon, KY 40222). A burial will be held on Thursday, March 12th 2026 at the Cave Hill Cemetery (701 Baxter Ave, Louisville, KY 40204).
