Robert A. Britton, 90, of Nutley, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2026. Born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, he attended St. Michael’s Grammar and High Schools and had lived in Nutley since 1967. The son of the late Addison and Virginia (Cook) Britton, he served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960, stationed in Germany with the Infantry. While in the service he played on the Army’s traveling baseball and football teams. He was a longtime member of the Insulators Local 32 Union in Highland Park, New Jersey, and worked on the Alaskan Pipeline in 1976–1977.
A lifelong sports enthusiast and devoted Boston Red Sox fan, Robert also quietly cheered for the Yankees. He gave many years to coaching youth athletics, beginning with the Nutley Central Little League and later guiding the Good Shepherd Academy Girls Softball Team. Deeply committed to his community, he was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Council 835 in Belleville and a longtime member of the Nutley Elks Lodge since 1982. He served the Elks in numerous leadership roles, including as Past Exalted Ruler, Past District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler, Vice-President of the North Central District, Co-Chairman of Youth Activities, and member of the Veterans and Convention committees.
Robert is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara; his children, Robert M. Britton (Daphne) and Mary Ann Pettit (Harry); his brother, James Britton (Angela); brothers-in-law George Daudelin and David Roemer; sister-in-law Annette; and five cherished grandchildren, Deanna, Chase, Isabella, Andy, and Alex. He was predeceased by his siblings John (Jack) Britton and Elizabeth (Betty) Grogan and her late husband James, as well as his sister-in-law Patricia. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews whom he adored.
