Schermerhorn, age 87, passed away on February 27, 2026 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital. Per Rita's wishs there will be no public calling hours or funeral services. Burial will be at a later date in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Hammond.Rita Rexford Schermerhorn was born in Redwood, NY on September 26, 1938. She was the daughter of Grace Steacy and Ervin Rexford. She graduated from Redwood High School in 1958. Rita worked in various places and retired from Citizens Telephone Company in Hammond, NY. She married Charles Schermerhorn on June 28, 1963. Charles was in the military and they lived on several bases, including Maryland, Texas and Germany. He retired from the military in 1982 and they retired to Hammond, NY to live. Charles passed away on July 14, 1989.In 2021, she moved to Massena to be close to family. She enjoyed spending winters in Myrtle Beach for several years.Rita is survived by her caregivers, Connie Rexford, Sue VanDusen and Jay Bowles all from Massena. She is also is survived by several nieces, nephews and very special friends, Craig and Gerry Travgers and their families.
