November 3, 1951— March 11, 2026
Chanhassen, MN
Richard S. Hintz, known to all as Rick, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2026, at the age of 74 while undergoing treatment at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
Born in 1951 in Urbandale, Iowa, Rick grew up as the middle of three brothers, enjoying a lively childhood filled with sports, fishing at the family cabin, and the occasional misadventure with his brothers Ron and Gary. He graduated from Urbandale High School in 1970 and earned a degree in Architecture from Iowa State University in 1974. After serving in the Peace Corps in Western Samoa and traveling through Europe, he moved to Minnesota to pursue a graduate degree in Architecture at the University of Minnesota, studying under Ralph Rapson. This experience ignited his lifelong passion for Modernist design, leading to a distinguished 40-year career in healthcare architecture with HGA, Perkins&Will, and BWBR.
In Minneapolis, Rick met Peg Fitzgerald, and the two married and built a life together, first in South Minneapolis and later in Minnetonka. They welcomed three sons: Connor, Matthew, and Lucas. Rick was a devoted and joyful father who coached his sons’ sports teams, orchestrated backyard campouts, staged living-room wrestling matches, and remained actively involved in their lives through school projects, driving lessons, and college transitions. He expressed his love through quiet, consistent acts of service and support. To his nephews Aaron, David, and Jon, he was the beloved Uncle Rick.
In retirement after 2020, Rick worked part-time as a consultant, grew tomatoes in his garden, volunteered for DFL campaigns, and enjoyed daily walks around Lake Lotus in Chanhassen with his dogs Luke and Benji. Known for his kind and attentive nature, he had a gift for listening patiently and offering perfectly timed, often humorous insights that left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Rick was preceded in death by his mother Doris, father Roger, brother Gary, and nephew Jonathan. He is survived by his wife Peg, sons Connor (Jane) of Finlayson, Minnesota, Matthew (Drianne) of New York, New York, and Lucas of Chanhassen, Minnesota, his grandson Rowan, and his beloved dogs Luke and Benji.
