Dick served in the United States Army from May 1953 to May 1955, continuing in the reserves until 1961. A Private First Class, he was assigned to the 44th Infantry Division and the 31st Infantry Division as a Regiment Unit Supply Specialist. He served during the Korean War and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Ribbon, and Marksmanship Badge.
He worked as an accountant for Geico Insurance, Gart Brothers Sporting Goods, and Sports Authority. In his free time, he enjoyed travel, bowling, and golf.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Paul Johnson and Carl Johnson, his wife Elma Johnson, and his daughter-in-law Barbara Igo. He is survived by his son, Michael Igo of Goodview, Virginia; granddaughter Brianna (Jarrett) Davis of Floyd, Virginia; great-grandson Chance (Paige) Harrison of Fayetteville, North Carolina; great-great-granddaughter August; niece Kristine; and nephews Hugh and Tim.
