December 5, 1973 March 5, 2026

Deltona, FL

Richard Louis Peacock, Jr., a devoted son, brother, nephew, educator, journalist, and lifelong learner, passed away leaving a legacy of knowledge, curiosity, and love for family, friends, and community.

Richard’s life was defined by curiosity, compassion, and dedication. He inspired students and colleagues alike, shared knowledge freely, and lived fully with a passion for history and learning. He found joy in exploring ideas, spending time outdoors, cooking, and tending his garden. In every conversation, he left a mark of wisdom and warmth.

Born in Fort Myers, Florida, to Saundra Hill Peacock of Arcadia, Florida, and Richard L. Peacock, Sr., he spent his early childhood in Punta Gorda, Florida, before moving to Arcadia, where he completed his late elementary, middle, and high school years. A dedicated student, he graduated with honors from DeSoto County High School. He went on to graduate with honors from Morehouse College in 1996. While at Morehouse and in the years that followed, he served as Office Manager and Editorial Assistant for the scholarly journal The Journal of Negro History. He later earned a master’s degree from Florida Atlantic University while pursuing journalism, and he attended The Poynter Institute for Media Studies. His journalistic work earned multiple awards and commendations, most notably for his reporting on the “Fighting Bailey Brothers,” seven African American siblings from Punta Gorda who served heroically in World War II and the Korean War, including one who was a Tuskegee Airman.

After many years in journalism, Richard followed a calling in education, inspired by his family’s strong tradition of academic achievement. He participated in the Hechinger Institute at Teachers College, Columbia University, and ultimately devoted his professional life to higher education and mentoring. He served as Chair and Professor at Bethune-Cookman University, where he remained deeply committed to empowering students through knowledge, critical thinking, and historical understanding. At the time of his passing, he resided in Deltona, Florida.

He is survived by his loving mother, Saundra Hill Peacock; his sisters, Yolanda Peacock and April Peacock; his dog Max; his aunt and uncles, Charlotte P. Carter, Booker M. Hill, and James B. Hill, Sr.; and his cousins, Romona Gollman, Vonda Morrison, Tonya Carter, Falana Staples, Sundiata Hill, Sonni Hill, Csorrell Cason, Saundra Hill, James Hill, Jr., and Jamon Hill. He will be fondly remembered by many other cousins, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were touched by his wisdom, kindness, and joyful spirit.
