Crawfordville, FL
Richard Lennell Sanders, Sr., of Wakulla, Florida, passed away on March 9, 2026, at the age of 73. Born on July 17, 1952, in Sopchoppy to John Woolley and Pauline (Revell) Sanders, Richard was a lifelong resident of the area who embodied a genuine “salt of the earth” spirit. After graduating from Wakulla High School in 1970, he served honorably for six years in the Florida Army National Guard. He spent his career in reforestation and land clearing, work that reflected his deep connection to the land he loved.
At the heart of Richard’s life was his wife of 47 years, Patricia Sanders. Together they raised a large and loving family that remained his greatest source of pride and joy. He cherished simple pleasures—successful hunting trips, quiet days fishing, tending his garden, and above all, the laughter of his children and grandchildren. Known for his one-of-a-kind songs and legendary storytelling, Richard had a witty, unique way of seeing the world that endeared him to everyone who knew him. His signature catchphrase, “Vasa tamale!” will long be remembered as a reflection of his spirited personality.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Patricia Sanders; his children, Sabrina Sanders, Jennifer Reyes, Wendy Sanders, Richie Sanders (Tabitha), and Kristi Sanders; his grandchildren, Sarah, Lyric, Caleb, Maya, Tabin, Aiden, Benjamin, Addalyn, and Rynleigh; his siblings, Anthony Sanders (Shari), Jerry Sanders (Barbara), Callie (Ricky), and Noel; and a vast extended family of more than 40 nieces and nephews and many friends he considered family. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Jack, James, Willard, Gilbert, and Trixie.
Richard lived as part of the natural world around him. He will be remembered every time a line is cast, a garden is harvested, or a story is shared around the family table.
