Preserve forever →Richard "Dick" Janes
September 15, 1933— March 7, 2026
Indianola, IA
Richard “Dick” Lloyd Janes, 92, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, March 7, 2026.
Born on September 15, 1933, in Jewell, Iowa, to Harry and Charlotte (Swenson) Janes, Dick graduated from Webster City High School with the Class of 1951. On January 24, 1954, he married Jeanne Hansen, and together they built a life rooted in love, family, and community in Webster City, where they lived for 59 years. In 2014, they moved to Indianola to be closer to their children.
Dick dedicated 43 years to Bell Telephone, later known as Northwestern Bell and part of US West. He was known for his strong work ethic, reliability, and quiet pride in a job well done. Above all, he cherished his family. He is survived by his children—Keith Janes, Barbara (Gerald) Knoll, Susan Prather, Cheryl (Jeff) Harvey, Lloyd (Cheryl) Janes, and Karen (Alan) Archibold—all of Indianola, along with 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Roger, brother-in-law Virgil Rockow, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Jeanne, his parents, son-in-law Wayne Prather, sisters Charlene Rockow and Donna Klein, and brother-in-law Jack Klein.
Dick will be remembered as a true jack of all trades who was happiest tinkering in the garage or around the house. He had a special gift for working on small engines and cars, rarely passing up the chance to take something apart and put it back together better than before. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing, finding peace in quiet moments on the water. A talented guitarist, he filled his home with music and shared that joy with family and friends. His steady presence, mechanical ingenuity, love of the outdoors, and quiet devotion to those he loved will be deeply missed.
