August 31, 1961— March 11, 2026
Northbrook, IL
Richard Joseph Czajka Jr. passed away peacefully at home on March 11, 2026, following a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in Wicker Park on August 31, 1961, and raised in Northbrook, Rich embraced life with a boundless curiosity from an early age. He played soccer, swam, caddied, participated in Boy Scouts, studied piano, performed on French horn in his high school marching band, and sang and played bass in a rock band. A devoted history buff and avid reader, he carried that same thirst for knowledge and experience throughout his life.
After graduating from Glenbrook North High School, Rich served in the United States Air Force at RAF Alconbury in England. The years he spent overseas, exploring London on weekends and immersing himself in English culture, music, and community, left a lasting impact on him. Upon returning, he continued his education at Oakton Community College, Columbia College Chicago, and Northern Illinois University, where he met his future wife, Sheila. Together they shared a love of concerts, travel, and time spent with family.
Later in life, Rich rediscovered his Catholic faith and was confirmed, eventually becoming godfather to three children. In 2002, he and Sheila welcomed their son, Richard III, known as Richie. Rich cherished fatherhood and filled their days with visits to the Art Institute, games at Wrigley Field, rock concerts, and Sunday Mass. He worked in various roles throughout his career, including delivering mail, earning his real estate license, and pension administration at Hewitt Associates, but found his greatest joy in his final position at Trader Joe’s, where he thrived on the energy of the store and the connections he made with coworkers.
Even in his later years, Rich stayed active, riding his road bike through the northern suburbs, running, reading, and collecting vinyl records as a proud audiophile. In his final year, he took up building LEGO sets with characteristic determination and skill. He faced his illness with courage and never lost his deep love for life. He is survived by his wife Sheila, his son Richard III, his brother Francis (Carrie), and many extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Sr. and Marian.
