November 26, 1942— March 4, 2026
Wellsville, OH
Richard Daniel “Dick” Smith, 83, of Wellsville, passed away on March 4, 2026, at St. Elizabeth Hospital surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness.
Born in Steubenville on November 26, 1942, Dick was the son of the late Andrew Zdinak and Anna Rock Smith. A 1960 graduate of Toronto High School, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Taconic before earning a bachelor’s degree from Ohio University. A longtime member of Holy Trinity Parish, he served as a cantor for more than twenty years and remained deeply involved in parish life through the board of St. Aloysius School, Christ Renews His Parish, and the Parish Ministry Process. For thirty years he worked as an environmental engineer at First Energy/Penn Power. In retirement, he found joy in serving as a substitute teacher for Beaver Local and St. Aloysius School. He loved gardening, fishing, and, most of all, spending time with his wife and family.
He is survived by his devoted wife of fifty-seven years, Mary Ann Argentine Smith, whom he married on December 7, 1968. Together they raised four children: Kristin Smith, Donna Turner (John), Jillian Longo (Ryan), and Steven Smith (Diamira). Dick cherished his eight grandchildren, Cameron, Joseph, and Eddie McNicol, Elena and Rosanna Turner, and Vito, Contessa, and August Longo. He is also survived by his sister Paula Smith, brother Robert (Jill) Smith, sister-in-law Donna Smith, and his beloved dog and best friend, Max Ace.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother A. David Smith and his son-in-law Sean McNicol.
