Richard Charles Smith Sr.

Richard Charles Smith, Sr., 84, of Covington, passed away on March 6, 2026, at Alleghany Health and Rehab in Clifton Forge.

Born on August 15, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of the late Charles and Margaret Donohue Smith. Richard served honorably in the United States Air Force in the early 1960s, with a tour in Pakistan and a posting at McGuire Air Force Base near Wrightstown, New Jersey. After his military service, he brought his financial expertise to his role as Director of Finance at Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. He found great enjoyment in gaming and casino visits throughout his life.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Cohen Smith; a son, Greg Smith; one step-granddaughter, Sarah Berger; and his ex-wife, Barbara Spalding Smith.

Richard is survived by his sons, Richard C. Smith, Jr. and Chris Smith and his wife, Emily; his grandchildren, Kiersten Smith, Charlotte Smith, Lillian Smith, Christopher Smith, and Julia Smith; and three step-grandchildren, Amanda Lehnert, Nicole Berger, and Bryan Berger. In accordance with his wishes, his body was cremated and a private memorial service will be held at a later date.
