Springfield, VT
Richard Allan "Jake" Jacobs, 74, of Springfield, Vermont, passed away on March 8, 2026. Born on January 2, 1952, in Midland, Michigan, he graduated from South Burlington High School in 1970 and served in the United States Army until receiving an honorable discharge in 1978.
A successful businessman and landlord, Jake owned and operated Jake's South Street Market in Springfield for more than 45 years. What began as a small convenience store grew under his leadership into a beloved community destination known for its deli items, meats, and take-out meals. With his street-smart business sense and warm, personable nature, he forged lasting relationships with customers, tenants, and neighbors while taking pride in supporting the community he called home.
Jake held a lifelong passion for the outdoors as an avid rifle and bow hunter. He traveled extensively in pursuit of both sport and cultural experiences, forming many enduring friendships along the way as he learned about different traditions, lifestyles, and cuisines. He especially cherished his land and hunting camp in Williamstown, Vermont, where he devoted countless hours to improving the forest and wildlife habitat. He also found joy in home gardening and in the companionship of the many dogs and cats that shared his life over the years.
Deeply committed to his community, Jake was an active member of the Springfield Moose Lodge 679, serving in numerous leadership roles including President. His dedication was widely admired, and he earned Moose International’s highest honor, the Pilgrim Degree. He was also a life member of the Springfield Elks, the Springfield VFW, the Chester American Legion, the South Burlington Eagles, and the St. Johns Lodge FAM in Springfield.
Jake was predeceased by his mother, Wilma Benson Jacobs Martin, and his brother, Michael Jacobs. He is survived by his stepfather, Roy Martin of South Burlington, Vermont; his brother, David Jacobs of Venice, Florida; his sister Suzanne Martin Couillard and her husband David of North Hero, Vermont; his sister Kathy Martin of Georgia and her fiancé Francis Whitney Jr. of Richford, Vermont; and his life partner, Janet Makela of Springfield, Vermont. He also leaves behind ten nieces and nephews, sharing a particularly close bond with his nephew, Michael Jacobs Jr.
