Ray Wallace Surface

Ray Wallace Surface transitioned into eternal honor to be with our Lord and Savior, on February 22, 2026, at the age of 96. He passed peacefully in Albuquerque, NM, at the home of his daughter, Sharon K. Surface-Lucero and son-in-law, Benjamin Lucero. He will be remembered as a beloved husband, father and grandfather.

Ray W. Surface is survived by his daughter, Sharon Surface-Lucero and son-in-law, Benjamin Lucero; his son, Michael Surface and daughter-in-law, Karen Buccola; and his only grandchild, Alyssa Lucero. He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Elsie Jane Surface; his mother and father, Dorothy Renn Surface and Chester Surface. He is survived and preceded by many family members he loved dearly.

Among Ray's most significant accomplishments were raising his two children, loving his wife, and providing a Godly home. Ray had an outstanding work ethic as he worked full-time, and he attended Central Technical Institute in the evenings to receive his Associates. He worked for the Atomic Energy Commissions and Department of Energy throughout his career and received many awards including: The Atomic Energy Commissions Highest Honor Award. Once retired, he spent his time with his wife helping raise his granddaughter. Ray was a devoted Christian, strong in his faith and having a close relationship with God. Devoted to reading his bible cover to cover. Ray and Elsie spent most their lives active in Loma Del Rey Baptist church. Ray loved to golf, bowling and fish. He loved going to the casino with his wife, son, or son-in-law.

To his family, he was more than just a father and grandfather. He was our guide, our protector, and our greatest teacher. He showed us, not just through words but through his actions, what it means to be kind, strong, and unwaveringly dedicated to the people you love. His laughter filled our home; his wisdom shaped our path.

And we're so grateful for the touch of heaven you gave us growing up. Now you know what Heaven is really like, and we can't wait until our whole family is together forever! (John Burke; Imagine Heaven)

Home

Take pause for just a moment

and look up to the skies

I want to show you heaven

as seen through joyful eyes

The moment I arrived here

I saw the sweetest sight

All those who'd gone before me

Surrounded by his light

They reached out and embraced me

and instantly I knew

That I'd fulfilled my purpose

and one day you will too

It's natural we are sad now

But try to let that go

There's overwhelming peace here

and beauty all aglow

We have no pain or suffering

No thought of right or wrong

No one here's an outsider

Each one of us belongs

There is no sense in judgment

His light reveals our soul

Each one unique and perfect

We make each other whole

So, when you really miss me

Just cast your eyes above

Remember I am home now

and sending you my love
