Poetker
Steinbach, MB
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear father, grandfather, and great-grandfather on March 11, 2026, at the age of 91. Born on October 7, 1934, in Steinbach, Manitoba, he was the oldest of eight children born to Henry and Agatha Poetker. He grew up on a farm just south of New Bothwell, where he learned the value of hard work, responsibility, and helping others—qualities that defined his entire life.
He worked on farms, at the flour mill, in mail delivery, and spent 24 years at Manitoba Sugar until his retirement in late 1994. He met the love of his life, Elma, in New Bothwell, and they married on June 16, 1957. Together they built a home and raised nine children, first in Winnipeg and later on a farm south of New Bothwell. A dedicated farmer alongside his full-time job, he was always ready to help neighbors and friends, especially with livestock in distress, and became known as the “go-to” person in such situations. He loved horses, volunteered many hours at the Mennonite Heritage Museum giving rides and demonstrating rope making and threshing, and was an active member of the Southeast Draft Horse Association, where he formed lifelong friendships.
He leaves behind his children Valerie (Randy) Verestiuk, Norman (Joan) Poetker, Harvey (Bernice) Poetker, daughter-in-law Robin Denis, Angela (Brian) Falk, and Irene Poetker, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who each held a special place in his heart. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Elma, who passed away in May 2025, and by their children Marilyn in 2012, Alvin in 2014, Wayne in 2024, and Brian in 2024, as well as three precious great-grandchildren. He is now reunited with them all.
Dad will be remembered for his strong work ethic, quiet strength, sense of humor, and his willingness to help anyone in need. His legacy lives on through the generations he leaves behind.
