Matheny, 96, of Washington, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, March 5, 2026. Phyllis was born on August 22, 1929 in Peoria, the daughter of the late Raymond and Nellie (Thrush) Edwards. Phyllis married David Matheny at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in East Peoria on October 1, 1949. They shared nearly 63 years of marriage until he preceded her in death on September 8, 2012. Phyllis was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Washington. She enjoyed playing golf, tennis, and bridge with her friends; but most of all she loved spending time with her family.Phyllis is survived by her children Linda (Dave) Matheny-Kecskes of Cape Coral, FL, Susan Elston of Washington, Laurie (Dean) Forden of Morton, and Andrew Matheny of Washington, 9 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and their families.In addition to her parents and husband, Phyllis was also preceded in death by her brother James Edwards.To honor her wishes cremation rites were accorded by Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will receive guests on Thursday, March 12, from 10 am until the time of the 11 am memorial service at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Washington.
