Phil was born on March 20, 1958, in Bartow, Florida, to the late Marvin Petty and Virginia Bennett, who undoubtedly welcomed him with open arms in the company of angels. Phil was a man who lived life with an open heart and generous spirit. His journey began in the vibrant community of Bartow, where he learned the values of hard work and dedication from his parents. Phil carried these lessons into his career, spending many years working diligently in the phosphate mines-a testament to his enduring work ethic and commitment. In his personal life, Phil was blessed with a loving family. He shared 25 beautiful years of marriage with his late wife, Mary Sumner, with whom he raised three children, Corina, Jennifer, and the late Phillip L. Petty, Jr. Phil was a devoted father who provided for his family with love and laughter, leaving an indelible mark on their hearts. In recent years, Phil found companionship and joy with his fiancée, Ann Shaw, sharing six wonderful years together. Phil's passions extended beyond his family and career. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan, enjoyed the thrill of the casino, and found happiness in shooting pool. His love for sports was evident as he played softball and passionately coached Little League, inspiring young minds with his infectious enthusiasm and competitive spirit. A man of humor and warmth, Phil was known for being outgoing and full of life. He had a knack for making those around him smile, often with a well-timed joke or a playful tease. Phil was generous to a fault, always ready to lend a helping hand-indeed, he would give you the shirt off his back. Though set in his ways, his convictions were grounded in love and sincerity. Phil leaves behind a cherished legacy in his surviving family: his fiancée, Ann Shaw; his daughters, Corina Petty and her partner Rohan Shepherd, Jennifer Gibson and her husband Chris Michalski; and Ann's daughter, Anna Shaw. He was the proud grandfather of Dylan and Makayla Gibson and the doting great-grandfather to little Elijah Corley. Phil's memory will continue to be a guiding light in their lives, reminding them of the importance of love, laughter, and resilience. A celebration of Phil's life will be held on March 3, 2026, with a viewing at 10:00 AM following by a funeral service at 11:00 AM at Church Alive, located at 3850 Chart Prine Rd Lakeland, FL, United States, Florida 33810. He will be laid to rest at beside his wife at Bethel Baptist Cemetery in Lakeland. In this time of remembrance, the family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Central Florida Casket Store and Funeral Chapel, as well as Church Alive Lakeland, for their support and care.
