May 16, 1942— March 13, 2026
Brooklin, ME
Philip “Pip” Wick, born in Boston in 1942, was the oldest of three boys who grew up in Connecticut. His family spent winters in the Bahamas, where his father’s war injury made the Northeast cold difficult to bear. From a young age Pip was at home on the water, rowing his younger brothers to school across the bay at Man-of-War Cay aboard the family’s original Lucayo motorsailer.
At seventeen he met Judy, the love of his life. They married when he was twenty, welcomed daughter Shari a year later, Jenny two years after that, and son Chip five years following. The family lived in Rowayton, Connecticut, on the Five Mile River while Pip worked as a stockbroker in New York City. Their close-knit household found its greatest joy aboard their traditional wooden boat Flame, sharing both leisurely cruises and spirited races.
Later, after time in North Carolina and on the Wekiva River in Florida, Pip and Judy realized their long-held dream of building a larger vessel. The modern Lucayo, a Roger Marshall-designed 48-foot custom sloop, was constructed at Brooklin Boat Yard and launched in 1993. Pip, an accomplished carpenter, worked alongside the builders, and the experience so endeared them to the community that they left Florida and settled permanently in Maine.
An accomplished sailor, Pip crewed on numerous racing teams and came close to joining the 1974 America’s Cup contender Courageous. He was an avid diver in Florida and contributed to the early development of winged sails. With Judy he sailed Lucayo throughout the Caribbean, to Venezuela, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, the Azores, and many Cruising Club of America events, creating lasting memories with friends and family.
Pip was predeceased by his parents Philip and Marguerite “Bunny” Wick, his son Philip Charles “Chip” Wick in 2022, his grandson Nathaniel in 2023, and his beloved wife Judith in 2024. He is survived by his daughters Shari (Frank) and Jenny (Jim), grandchildren Victoria “Misha,” Seeta, Hayden, Megan, Allison, and Audrey “Rey,” and his brothers Christopher and Michael.
