Philip M. Coughlin

1937 — 2026

Kingston, MA

Philip M. Coughlin, born April 27, 1937, in Boston, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2026, in Kingston, Massachusetts, surrounded by his family.

Son of the late Francis and Gilda (Anzalone) Coughlin, Phil grew up in Boston and was preceded in death by his brother Francis (Rose) Coughlin and sister Mildred (Mimi) Coughlin. He is survived by his younger brother, Michael (Clare) Coughlin of Newton, Massachusetts. He was also preceded by his wife, Janice (Bower) Coughlin of Boston and Weymouth, and later by Martha Salemme (Coughlin) of Weymouth.

Phil proudly served in the United States Air Force, touring Italy and surrounding countries during peacetime. He worked as a meticulous printer for several companies in Boston and on the South Shore. In later years he found companionship with Jean Schutt, who cared for him with great devotion. He remained close lifelong friends with his in-laws, Lou and Dianne Marani, often sharing meals and laughter together.

A lover of music of all kinds, dancing, his cars, leather jacket, and aviator sunglasses, Phil was also an avid Patriots fan who lived to see all the Boston championships. Known to his family as Phil, Flip, Philly, The Phil, Pa, Pa Armstrong, Papa, G-Pa, Dad, and a few names not fit for print, he was witty, sarcastic, quick to laugh, and full of “off” jokes he loved to share. He was a proud and loving father to Lynne Sargent of Pembroke, Lisa Murphy of Rockland, and Philip (Donna) Coughlin of Kingston. He was stepfather to Jean (Jack) Page and Jack (Lynn) Mitchell. He leaves behind many grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews who will remember his sharp mind, endless stories, and unique personality.
