He was preceded in death by his wife, Dolores Nell, son George Nell, siblings Gordon Nell, Mildred Chapman, and Barbara Milligan. He is survived by his beloved fiancé Renee Barr-Hughart, his children, William Caffee, Robert Nell (Amy Nell), Michelle Dare, and Janet Nell (Rodney Henk), as well as his grandchildren, Andrea, Lauren, Jacob, Richard, Brockton, Gracie, and Milo, as well as his great-grandchild, Lucas.Phil was passionate about several things, including history, driving, films, and playing cards. His favorite game was pinochle. The world was blessed by his thoughtful, genuinely kind, loving soul and great sense of humor for nearly 94 years. His love for his family nearly matched his love of life.A memorial visitation will be held at the Boone County Museum of History located at 314 S State St., Belvidere, Illinois 61008 from 12:00 PM until 3:00 PM on Saturday, March 7, 2026. The memorial service will be at 1:00 PM.
