September 23, 1942— March 10, 2026
Bel Aire, KS
Peggy Sue Cox of Bel Aire, Kansas, passed away at the age of 83 on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.
Born on September 23, 1942, at Community Hospital in Elk City, Oklahoma, to Frank Williams and Mary Ellen Wherritt Williams, Peggy grew up on a farm 13 miles from Leedey. As a young girl she helped with farm chores—bringing in the milk cows, gathering eggs, working in the barn, dusting the house, and keeping an eye on her little brother Fred, who was always climbing. Her sister Penny arrived when Peggy was 19. She attended public school in Leedey, where she was known for her cheerful diligence.
Peggy met Billy Duke Cox at Southwestern Oklahoma State University, and they married on May 28, 1961, in Morewood, Oklahoma. They raised three sons: twins Larry Dwayne and Terry Dean, born in 1964, and David Ray, born in 1966. As the wife of a schoolteacher and superintendent, she was deeply involved in her church and community, particularly through the United Methodist Women’s organization. She found joy in quilting, always keeping one or two projects going, and the family loved camping, fishing, and spending time outdoors together.
In retirement, Peggy and Billy traveled extensively in their RV, driving the full length of the Alaska Highway and spending nine summers volunteering at a Forest Service information center high in the Rocky Mountains near Rico, Colorado. They moved to Enid, Oklahoma, after Billy’s cancer diagnosis in 2013, and in 2021 relocated to Bel Aire, Kansas, to be near their oldest son.
Peggy is survived by her sons Larry Cox and wife Sandy of Wichita, Kansas; Terry Cox and Janet Mickelson of Albertville, Minnesota; and David Cox and wife Melissa of Denton, Texas. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Jason, Brett, and Amber Cox of Wichita, and Kegan Cox of Denton, as well as her brother Fred Williams and wife Billie of Haskell, Oklahoma, and many other dear family members, nieces, nephews, and friends from her church and RVing years. She was preceded in death by her husband Billy, her parents, her sister Penny, and several beloved siblings-in-law and parents-in-law.
