Chuckey, TN
Peggy Lynn Shelton Shaw, 85, of Chuckey, Tennessee, passed away on March 9, 2026, at Greeneville Community Hospital after a battle with pneumonia. Born in Greeneville to Talmadge Glenn Shelton and Alma Pauline Gibson Shelton, Peggy spent her early years on the family dairy farm. She graduated from Doak High School in 1958, earned her B.A. from East Tennessee State University in 1961, and later received her M.A. in 1974. She married Robert “Denver” Shaw on August 18, 1961, and together they built their lifelong home in the Horse Creek community of Chuckey, where they raised their two daughters, Aleeta Shaw and Nancy Shaw-Hutsell.
Peggy taught in the Greene County school system for 32 years, beginning at Chuckey School and spending most of her career teaching kindergarten at Doak School. In addition to teaching, she and Denver worked alongside his parents and brother on the family farm. She is preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law Howard Shaw. She is survived by her husband of more than 64 years, Robert “Denver” Shaw; daughters Aleeta Shaw (Cody Storm) and Nancy Shaw-Hutsell (Caleb Hutsell); grandchildren Eli Barbour (Alison Colby), Emmalee Ruth Barbour, Aidan Storm, Lacie Odham Buchanan (Timothy and son Trevor), and step-grandchildren Jabob Hutsell (Chrisalyne and baby Baylor) and Kaylee Hutsell; siblings Sue Shelton Baskette (CW), Charles Shelton (Christine), and Gail Shelton Gregory; nieces and nephews; and many cherished friends, including Brenda Jones, Anne Brown, Louise Wilhoit, Pam Sizemore, Alice Hensley, Christopher Woods, Chelsea Pate, and Donna Coyne.
After retiring in 1993, Peggy devoted herself fully to her many passions. A gifted cook taught by her mother-in-law Ruth Shaw, she filled family gatherings and special occasions with Southern favorites and thoughtful treats. She loved decorating her home for every holiday, tending her flower gardens, and sharing her artistic talent through painting and drawing. She especially cherished painting alongside her granddaughter Emmalee. Peggy and her close friends traveled extensively across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with Denver joining many of the later trips. A longtime member of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church, she co-taught the Adult Sunday School class for many years and faithfully decorated the sanctuary according to the liturgical calendar. Above all, Peggy had a remarkable gift for connecting with people of all ages and backgrounds, turning brief encounters into meaningful moments of friendship.
She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, and friend whose warmth and generous spirit touched everyone she met.
