Pedro Oscar Nieves, age 87, of Waterbury, passed away on Sunday, March 8, 2026, surrounded by his loving family at home. He was the beloved husband of Jacqueline Ortiz.
Born on June 5, 1938, in Corozal, Puerto Rico, he was the cherished son of the late Pedro and Maria (Cuebas) Nieves. A pioneering figure in radio, Pedro founded and served as CEO of "La Puertorriquenisima," the first Spanish-language radio station in Connecticut. Through his station, he created a vital connection for the Hispanic community, celebrating Puerto Rican culture and bringing people together for decades. His entrepreneurial spirit, dedication to communication, and deep commitment to his community left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
He will be remembered for his contributions to the community and the love he shared with those around him. He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline; his sons, Christopher Nieves of South Carolina and Peter Nieves of New Fairfield; his sister, Sonia Nieves Burton of Florida; and many grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members and friends.
