October 17, 1935— March 9, 2026
West Union, IA
Paul Weidemann, 90, of West Union, Iowa, passed away on March 9, 2026. Born on October 17, 1935, in Hawkeye, Iowa, to Carl and Laura (Drier) Weidemann, Paul grew up working alongside his parents in their freight business after completing eighth grade in West Union.
In 1958, he met Deanna Holtzman at Loftus Café, and they married on August 16, 1959. Their marriage lasted 63 years, and they were the first couple to wed at the newly built Zion Lutheran Church in West Union. Together they raised two daughters, Angela and Melanie.
Paul was known for his strong work ethic, holding positions at Bemiss Distributing, Elsheimers, Iowa Ham/Corn Blossom Foods, Agri-Star, and Reyner Burial Vault. He also served for several years as a respected flagman at racetracks in Waukon, Independence, and the Fayette County Speedway. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed riding his Goldwing motorcycle, hunting mushrooms and asparagus to share with others, gambling, playing poker with friends at the bowling alley, and gathering for coffee with his group at Hardees. Above all, Paul cherished fishing in Iowa and Texas, especially the early mornings spent at local ponds with his nephew, Aaron Becker. He and Deanna also shared many happy trips to Las Vegas with friends and spent 21 winters in Texas.
Paul took great joy in visits with his grandchildren and always looked forward to time with his sister Judy and his beloved dog Sophie. He is survived by his daughters, Angie (Ron) McConnell and Melanie (Brad) Steffens; grandchildren Blake (Courtney), Andrew (Carsyn), and Nathan Steffens, and Alyson McConnell; his brother Willis Weidemann (Kathryn) of West Union; and sisters Karen Dyke of Eldorado, Judy Appelman, and Kathy (Fred) Mittan of West Union. He was preceded in death by his wife Deanna, his parents, brothers Charles, John, and Richard, and sister Carol.
