Jay, NY

Paul J. Benway, 88, of Glen Road in Jay, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2026, at Plattsburgh Rehab surrounded by his family.

Born on August 26, 1937, in Jay, New York, Paul was the son of the late Wyman Benway and Nina (Hathaway) Benway. He graduated from AuSable High School in 1955 and married Barbara Cave on September 20, 1958, at St. Agnes Church in Lake Placid. Their marriage lasted 62 years until her death in 2021.

Paul worked for many local employers, including North Country School, AuSable Valley Telephone Company, Edmonds Construction, the Town of Jay as assessor, the New York State Department of Transportation, and Northern Orchards. He retired from the Department of Transportation in 1993 and devoted the next 26 years to caring for his wife, Barbara. An active member of Holy Name Church before her disability, he served on the Parish Council and as a Eucharistic Minister, and volunteered each Labor Day. He took great pleasure in tending their vegetable gardens and flowerbeds, operated a firewood business that supplied many in the area, and cherished the home he and Barbara shared on Glen Road with its sweeping view of Whiteface Mountain. The couple also enjoyed square dancing together for many years.

Paul is survived by his six children, Christopher, Christina (Tim Oshier), Christal (Don Yando), Carol LaPorte, Paul (Carol Greenley), and Timothy (Cathy); 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and one future great-grandchild expected in June 2026; his sisters, Hazel Teriele and Harriet Rasco; and his brothers, Norris (Judy), Robert, and Alan (Marla). He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara; daughter-in-law, Kimberley Benway; son-in-law, Richard LaPorte; great-grandson, Noah Boettcher; his siblings, Helen (Jim Flynn), Hilda (Vaughn Hathaway), and Lional (Emmy) Benway; and brothers-in-law Bernard Teriele and Marshall Rasco and sisters-in-law Helena Benway and Maura Benway.
