Patricia Elizabeth McCord

July 20, 1953 March 8, 2026

Corvallis, OR

Patricia McCord, born July 20, 1953, in Watseka, Illinois, and who passed on March 8, 2026, lived a vibrant and purposeful life marked by intellect, passion, and deep devotion to family.

A scholar, teacher, mentor, writer, editor, and published author, Pat pursued her many endeavors with remarkable energy and dedication. She built an extensive personal library, cherished films, and hosted memorable Oscar parties each year. A committed Democrat, she lent her voice and support to the causes she believed in.

In 1979, while both were graduate students at Purdue University, Pat met Charlie Amacher. She married him in 1982, and together they moved to the mountains of Oregon. Though she had nearly completed her PhD, Pat chose instead to devote herself fully to raising their three children, Alec, Simon, and Quinn. She homeschooled them, advocated for them, and loved them with characteristic fierceness. She later delighted in her two grandsons, Elijah and Atticus.

Pat was known for her verbal acuity, erudition, and sharp wit. She had a distinctive personal style, a love of champagne, and a gift for lively conversation. A devoted little sister to Jo, Chip (who predeceased her), and Jeff, she remained close to her family in Illinois. She formed many lifelong friendships and touched all who knew her with her inimitable spirit.

She will be deeply missed by her husband Charlie, her children, grandchildren, siblings, and countless friends.
