Parnell Kilburn

1929 — 2026

Scottsburg, IN

Parnell Kilburn, 96, of Scottsburg, Indiana, passed away at home on March 13, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on April 17, 1929, in Beattyville, Kentucky, to Arthur and Martha “Mattie” (Seale) Kilburn, Parnell grew up in the place that helped shape the classy, pleasant, and deeply respected man so many came to know and admire. In 1966, he moved to the Scottsburg area, where he built the life and family that remained the center of his world.

Parnell proudly served in the United States Army. After his military service, he worked for many years before retiring from Morgan Foods as a maritime pilot. His strong work ethic and steady character earned him the lasting respect of those around him. On August 31, 1970, in Austin, Indiana, he married the love of his life, Joyce (Mink) Kilburn. Their marriage was marked by devotion, laughter, and a shared appreciation for life’s simple, meaningful moments.

He enjoyed spending time in Florida, cheering for his favorite NASCAR drivers, and proudly supporting the University of Kentucky. A man of faith and community, Parnell was a member of New Hope Christian Church in Nokomis, Florida, and the Masonic Lodge #684 in Beattyville, Kentucky. Above all, he cherished the time spent with those he loved.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Kilburn; his daughters, Heather (Jimmy) White of Austin, Indiana, and Brenda Rutherford of Scottsburg, Indiana; five grandchildren, Tyler White of Indianapolis, Caleb (Olivia) White of Indianapolis, Jimmie (Charlotte) Rutherford of Scottsburg, Scott (Kayla) Kilburn, and Stephanie (Michael) Gricius; and his sister, Clara Woodruff of Michigan. He was preceded in death by his son, Randy Kilburn, three brothers, and two sisters.
