Norman Joseph Van Riper

Norman Joseph Van Riper

September 29, 1937 March 5, 2026

Farmington Hills, MI

Norman Joseph Van Riper, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on March 5, 2026, in Farmington Hills, Michigan, at the age of 88. Born on September 29, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Norman and Susan Van Riper, he graduated from Detroit Catholic Central High School in 1955 and later from the University of Detroit. He built a successful career in sales, spending more than 20 years with McDonald Modular Solutions, where his personable nature and strong work ethic earned him lasting relationships with colleagues and clients alike.

Norm found great joy in life’s simple pleasures. An avid golfer, he spent many happy hours on the course with friends. He loved playing Euchre, faithfully cheering for the Detroit Tigers and Michigan State Spartans, and sharing corny jokes that never failed to bring smiles to those around him. His favorite family expression, “the Van Riper Summer Home—some are home, some are not,” was often heard with laughter. A longtime and dedicated member of the Monaghan Knights of Columbus, he served as Grand Knight and formed many lifelong friendships through both the Knights and his beloved Detroit Catholic Central.

Above all, Norm was deeply devoted to his family. He shared 61 loving years of marriage with his beloved wife, Margaret Van Riper. He was the proud father of Jill (Darren) Moore and Stephen (Mackenzie) Van Riper, and nothing brought him greater happiness than his role as grandfather to Allie (Jake) Parry, Rory and Daniel Plancon, and Mia, Shane, Vivian, and Claire Van Riper. He is also survived by his sister, Sharon House, and many loving nieces and nephews.

Norm was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved grandson, Nolan Plancon. He will be remembered for his warmth, humor, loyalty, and the many friendships he cherished throughout his life. His love for his family, his faith, and the joy he brought to others will be deeply missed.
