Mahomet - Norma Jean Tharp, 97, died Friday (March 6, 2026) at the Piatt County Nursing Home, Monticello.Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. with the funeral at noon Friday, March 13, at Mahomet United Methodist Church. The committal service will be at Greenup Cemetery at 3:30 that afternoon.She was born Sept. 28, 1928, in Cumberland County, the youngest of nine children born to Elmer and Rosa Simerl Matteson.She was married to Dannie Tharp, who preceded her in death after 73 years of marriage. Daughters Gale Brandner and Glenna Tharp, both of Savoy, survive, along with many beloved nieces and nephews.Norma was raised in Greenup and Savoy. She graduated from Champaign Central High School in 1946 and married Dannie on Feb. 26, 1947. Norma fulfilled a clerical career as bookkeeper of Patton Lumber Yard in Mahomet during the 1950s; secretary of Mahomet-Seymour High School 1962-1968; activity assistant at Americana Nursing Home 1973-1976; clerk at Follett's Book Store in the early 1970s; and clerk of the Champaign County Sheriff's Office in the 1970s and '80s. Her primary vocation, however, was as wife, mother, daughter and sister.Norma was an active member of Mahomet United Methodist Church since 1955 and American Legion Auxiliary Post 1015, holding numerous service and leadership positions in each.Norma loved to travel. She enjoyed camping trips to the beaches of Lake Michigan, often accompanied by extended family members and church friends. Norma was the glue that held extended family together by hosting family celebrations throughout the year. She loved being with people and was known for her graceful spirit, willingness to help others, hospitality, wit and humor. May her memory be a blessing.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mahomet United Methodist Church in care of her daughters.
