Biddeford, ME
Norene T. O’Brien, 87, of Biddeford, Maine, passed away unexpectedly at her home on March 12, 2026. Born on November 22, 1938, in Revere, Massachusetts, to Sherman and Norene Bates, she moved with her family to Lynn, Massachusetts, shortly after birth. Her father’s lifelong work with the Animal Rescue League instilled in Norene a deep and enduring love for animals of all kinds, from dogs and cats to birds, fish, and chipmunks, a passion she carried throughout her life.
Norene’s greatest joys were her family and dancing. She loved live bands and high-energy music, and she lit up the dance floor wherever she went. Young women were drawn to her warmth and enthusiasm, often leaving the evening with a new friend in Norene. She shared many happy years with her life partner, Dick Coffin, enjoying weekends dancing, going to the movies, exploring artisan markets, visiting friends and family, and making trips to theme parks—especially Disney World, which she called the happiest place on earth.
A devoted mother to her three children, Norene later built successful careers that allowed her to connect with others. Known for her bright smile, kind heart, and fun-loving spirit, she touched everyone she met. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Norene is survived by her loving partner, Dick Coffin; her daughter, Kim-Marie Phelan and her husband, Mark O’Connor; her daughter-in-law, Faith O’Brien; her brother, William Bates; Dick’s son, Lorne Coffin, and his wife, Donna, and their daughter, Savannah, and children; her daughter, Nerine Sullivan, and her husband, Timothy Sullivan; her grandchildren, Patrick Phelan and his wife, Nicole, Brittany O’Neil, Joshua O’Neil, and Timothy John Sullivan, Jr.; her great-grandchild, Cayden James Phelan; and many nieces, nephews, and their families. She was predeceased by her son, James K. O’Brien, and her sister, Pamela Gabrielowski.
