January 5, 1939— March 10, 2026
Salem, ID
Noel J. Greenhalgh, 87, passed away peacefully at his home in Salem, Idaho, on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. Born on January 5, 1939, to Floyd and Mary Hill Greenhalgh, he learned early the value of hard work and a love for the outdoors. As a boy he rode his bike around town with his brother Wendell, delighting in visits to Matthews Grocery. In 1949 the family moved to Chester, where he welcomed his twin sisters, known affectionately as the “Snow Plane Twins.”
Chester became the place Noel cherished most. A hardworking and talented young man, he played church baseball and basketball, serving as catcher on a team invited to the All Church Tournament in Salt Lake City in 1956. In high school he continued playing basketball and was an active FFA member, serving as an officer and attending the state convention in Boise, an experience he always treasured.
While living in Chester, Noel met the love of his life, hometown girl Jean Hathaway. They married in August 1958 and built a beautiful life together. They worked for many years in Yellowstone National Park alongside Jean’s father, Floyd Hathaway. Noel later farmed and worked in construction, becoming a master carpenter and builder whose skill was admired by many. He created countless keepsakes that remain treasured by his family.
In 1989, Noel and Jean moved to Salem, where their family continued to grow. His greatest joy was his family. He and Jean were blessed with five children, 22 grandchildren, and 31 great-grandchildren. His example of hard work, kindness, and patience will continue to guide them all.
Noel is survived by his children, Ryan (Cora) Greenhalgh, Annette (Tim) Miller, Todd (Corie) Greenhalgh, Audra (Glade) Mason, and Chris (Karen) Greenhalgh, his brother Wendell Greenhalgh, and a sister, Arva (Dennis) Jorgenson. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean, his parents, a sister Marva Greenhalgh, and his sister-in-law Sylvia Greenhalgh.
Noel leaves behind a legacy of love, craftsmanship, and quiet strength. His presence will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
