Nancy L. Shumway of Bloomingdale, New York, went home to be with her Savior and Lord, whom she loved and served from her youth, on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. She passed peacefully at Mercy Living Center in Tupper Lake.
Born on July 9, 1938, in Bloomingdale to Arthur and Hilda (Johnson) Shene, Nancy grew up in Schenectady and graduated from Colonie Central High School. She married Rev. Daniel Shumway on August 30, 1958. The couple lived in several places across New York before settling in Bloomingdale, where they eventually retired.
A devoted housewife and minister’s wife, Nancy taught piano lessons to many students for more than 40 years. She served as pianist and organist, taught Sunday school classes in each church they attended, and worked as an elementary teacher’s aide in the Saranac Lake school district. She loved to cook, bake, can, and preserve the harvest from their garden. A superb seamstress, she also found joy in crocheting for her family and for missionary ministries. Above all, her devotion was to her Lord and to her family, by whom she was deeply loved.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Daniel, her children D. Evan and his former wife Susan Shumway of Canton, Ohio, Rodney (Lisa) of Bloomingdale, New York, Esther (Mark) Murnane of East Syracuse, New York, and Keith (Leeann) of Wasilla, Alaska, her grandchildren D. Ryan (Emily), Ashley (Dale), Bradley (Danielle), Brittany (Josh), Luke, Emily, Brooklynn, Dawson, Erin and Kolby, six great-grandchildren with another on the way, two sisters-in-law, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters Judith and Mary and her brother Philip.
