January 29, 1927— March 4, 2026
Denver, CO
Nancy Alice Burns Bonner passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on the evening of March 4, 2026, at Hallmark Nursing Center in Denver, Colorado. She had recently celebrated her 99th birthday. Born in Dallas, Texas, on January 29, 1927, to John Henry Moses and Charlotte Alice Foley, Nancy lived a life marked by deep faith, creativity, and unwavering devotion to her family.
She shared two long and meaningful marriages. She married Kenneth Morris Burns on March 25, 1945, in Shreveport, Louisiana, and they remained together until his death in January 1987. In February 1997 she married Douglas Gray Bonner of Shreveport, Louisiana, who passed away in July 2018.
After completing high school in Jena, Louisiana, Nancy attended business school in Dallas. She later returned to college in her fifties, earning a degree in Music Education from Kansas Wesleyan University. A gifted musician and lifelong learner, she served her churches for more than four decades as pianist, Sunday school teacher, and youth choir director. She and Kenneth were instrumental in founding Calvary Baptist Church and Bel-Air Southern Baptist Church in Salina, Kansas. Nancy also taught piano from her home for many years, sharing her love of music—and her faith—with hundreds of students. After moving to Shreveport in late 1987, she taught music at Holy Rosary School and remained active in choir and Sunday school at Highland Baptist Church and later First Baptist Church of Shreveport.
Nancy was a poet, songwriter, playwright, and producer who embraced big dreams and drew others into her passions. Above all, she took the greatest pride in her family, fiercely protecting and including every member. She was predeceased by her eldest son, Stephen Morris Burns. She is survived by her daughter, Cathy Lorena Burns Minton, and sons John Philip Burns and David Michael Burns, as well as her sister Johnette Abigail Evans, brother Don Michael Moses, step-children Bonnie Kauffman, Anne Jones, and Susan Aldredge, fourteen grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
