Naimeh Mukarkar Jernigan was born on November 7, 1928, in Beit Jala, Palestine, and passed away peacefully on March 9, 2026, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. A beloved daughter, sister, and mother, she devoted her life to education and the empowerment of others. After earning her Bachelor of Education from Jerusalem Girl’s College in 1952, she emigrated to the United States. She went on to receive a Bachelor of Social Work from Bluffton College in 1955 and continued her studies in social work at the Hartford Seminary Foundation. Naimeh worked as a teacher in both private and public institutions and as a social worker supporting youth in need in New Jersey. Her career reflected a deep commitment to helping others grow and thrive.
Naimeh was known for her bravery, self-determination, and warm presence. She had a remarkable ability to put people at ease and formed genuine friendships wherever she went. Her compassionate spirit allowed her to recognize those in need and respond with both practical support and lasting friendship. She cherished time with family and friends, creating deep connections and a strong sense of community around her. An avid reader with a profound appreciation for nature, she filled her life with beauty and knowledge.
Naimeh is survived by her sons, John L. Jernigan (Jill Lukas) and Frederick A. Jernigan (Sharon Ellison), her grandson John B. Jernigan, and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Sabah; her father, Salameh Mukarkar; and her siblings, Helen Mesleh, Sliman Mukarkar, Hanna Mukarkar, Sophie Mukarkar, and Miriam Eltarih.
