The Memorial Service will be Saturday, March 21, 2026 at 11:00 AM, at J.B. Rhodes Jr. Memorial Chapel, 1701 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, NC 27534. The Staff of J. B. Rhodes Funeral Home & Cremation would like to extend their deepest condolences to the family and please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers during their time of bereavement.Forever in our HeartsLarry Gene Matthews, born in Macclesfield, North Carolina August 21 1956, passed away peacefully March 10, 2026. Larry was the son of Bennie Gene Wooten and Helen Matthews Wooten.Larry will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his service to his country, and his strong work ethic. He touched many with his vibrant personality and caring demeanor. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, entering the military at the young age of 17. During his 19 years and one day of service, he started as an infantryman and worked his way to become the post master as a Master Seargent. He was stationed in several Locations including Turkey, Germany, Panama, Rome, Italy, Myrtle Beach, and his final destination at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota. After his military service, Larry continued to work hard and provide for his family. After retiring he worked at Smithfield plant and the Correctional Center in Smithfield, North Carolina before starting a career with FedEx for over 13 years as a courier and retiring from that company as well. Afterwards he held positions in security, drove 18-wheelers, worked briefly at Walmart before retiring for good. He is survived by his wife Paulette Matthews whom he married in 1975. Together they shared over 50 years of marriage, a milestone on April 12th 2025. His son Belfon Matthews, daughter in law Kiea Davis Matthews and four grand children. Kennedy Frazier, Roman Frazier, Jayden Matthews and Addison Frazier. His sisters Shirley Woodard, Betty Farmer, Juanita Wooten. His brother Lacey Thomas Matthews preceding him in death (2000). Nieces April Farmer, Ebony Dorfiah, Nephews Timothy Woodard, Terry Wooten, and Robert Farmer. His sister in law Willette Ward Barnes (Winston Barnes) brother in law, sister in law LaTerrie W. Harris (Clayton Harris Jr.) brother in law. Niece Latrice Whitfield and nephews James Whitfield and Tony Ward.
