Amos Hill, age 92, of Statesboro, Georgia, passed away on Monday, March 2, 2026, at East Georgia Regional Medical Center. A lifelong resident of Bulloch County, he was the son of the late John Henry and Evelyn Owens Hill. He attended the Bulloch County School System and began working at an early age to help support his family.
At sixteen, Amos started his long career with the Bulloch County Board of Education as a school bus driver. He later served as a custodian at Statesboro High School and then at Sallie Zetterower School, retiring after 47 years of dedicated service. Known for his mechanical skill, he repaired vehicles for people throughout Bulloch and surrounding counties for many years while also assisting his brother with farm work. An avid sports enthusiast, he played catcher for the Ruff Rider Baseball Team and served as the beloved honorary basketball coach, known as “Coach Hill #2,” for the Statesboro High School Blue Devils. To many, he was affectionately called “Famous Amos” or simply “Fame.”
A longtime member of Magnolia Missionary Baptist Church, Amos was preceded in death by his parents and all seven of his siblings: L.D. Hill, Susie Mae Hill Clifton, Thomas Hill, Janie Hill, John Hill, Roger Hill, and Ben Samuel Hill. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 66 years, Rosetta Smith Hill of Statesboro; his children, Amos Hill Jr., Derry Hill, Anthony Hill, and Tarliece Hill, all of Statesboro; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and his in-laws, Ronnie Mae Hill Reeves of Statesboro, Johnny and Valaida Smith of Atco, New Jersey, Ruby Tullie of Wetumpka, Alabama, and Jackie Wortham of Gulf Breeze, Florida. He will be deeply missed by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
